Handsome Gunner is what rescue is all about. This sweet and intelligent boy was left behind when his family moved away they just left him. His kind neighbors took care of Gunner for many months they provided loving attention, veterinary care, and good nutrition for him (even cooked special treats for him) but they were not able to keep him permanently because they have senior dogs who would not accept a new dog into their home. A volunteer from Pet Placement Center met Gunner, fell for his charm, and asked that we help find this sweet dog a home of his own. Gunner arrived at PPC riding co-pilot and wearing a big grin like a perfect gentleman in his rescuers truck. First thing he did was lean out the window and plant a gentle dog kiss right on the mouth of one of our volunteers. Nice to meet you! We LOVE this sweet boy. Gunner is an American Staffordshire Terrier mix and was born around July 20, xxxxand weighs 43 pounds. Not sure what is in his mix, but his fur and disposition makes us think Golden Labrador Retriever. The mix of American Staffordshire Terrier and Labrador Retriever equals a loving, intelligent, playful personality. Both breeds were made to give love and that is exactly what Gunner does with everyone he meets. He loves the company of other dogs, but it is best if those dogs are close to Gunners size because he likes to play rambunctiously. Gunner weighs 50 pounds. Gunner is a nice example of his breed in both appearance and disposition. Staffys are good natured, affectionate, amusing, intelligent, and extremely loyal pets. When raised from puppyhood with consistent kind discipline and the proper amount of exercise American Staffys are happy dogs who want to please their person. Gunner has a beautiful coat and a sweet personality. He lis not good with other dogs, but may be alright with smaller female dogs. He does not mind being picked up and carried. He responds to praise and touch the way most dogs respond to treats. Gunner is a calm, easygoing boy and his ideal home will provide opportunities to exercise or take daily walks. He can be rambunctious if he does not have enough exercise or a job to do. A common misconception about American Staffordshire Terriers is that they grow into muscle bound hulks. This is generally not the case as the majority of Staffys are agile and athletic. Gunner is part of our Adopt & Stay program. His adoption includes a FREE six-week training course at Play Dog Excellent. This will help him adjust to life as a family member in his new home. Gunner is in foster care from Sunday evenings until Thursday mornings each week. His foster mom wanted to make sure that this handsome boy could be seen at the shelter during peak hours. After these short absences he comes home to his canine companions with a nice to seeya again. He picks right up where he left off. We continue his training leash walking, learning to "wait", crating, playing respectfully with his buddies. He really is a good dog. As you can see from the picture taking a nap on the sofa that he loves being in a home and having a family. He is at a healthy weight and has a good appetite. He is not food aggressive and waits patiently for his food to be served. You can see him at PPC Thursday through Sunday or his foster home any time during the week. We're open Wednesday - Sunday 12 - 5 p.m. The adoption fee is $90 which includes a free veterinary exam within 2 weeks of adoption at local participating vets, up to date vaccinations, test for heartworms, heartworm preventative, deworming, flea treatment, microchip, & spay or neuter.
